Osekre & the Lucky Bastards – Profile

If you’re still not sure what you’re doing on December 6th, keep in mind that the Humanitarian Notes fundraiser will feature Osekre and the Lucky Bastards. Pretty easy decision, right? Also, I’ll be there.

Not familiar with Osekre? Well, he can help bring it into focus:

Where are you based in New York?

Haha, we can’t seem to be able to answer this question appropriately because we like to think of ourselves as a Brooklyn based band even though majority of the band lives in Manhattan :)

 Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Kokomlemle, Accra-Ghana.

What are the main influences on your musical style?

Lots. Specifically, Osibisa, Fela, Ben Harper, Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Damien Rice. The biggest influence on my style is a style of music called “Jama.”

What do you want an audience to remember or take-away from a show?

I want my audience to forget about everything happening outside in the world and for a minute, second or hour, give themselves the opportunity to be happy. If they can’t remember anything from the numerous lyrics I throw at them, I hope somehow that they can at least remember that they count. “I count because I remember. I count because I remember, I count because I remember, I count because I have not forgotten.” The essence of the individual and the collective is at the core of my message. Know who you are and remember when others forget.

What have you been listening to lately?

Aretha Franklin, The J Period+Fela+Bob Dylan Mix tape, Japanther, a lot of Joe Purdy, Young the giant and Phosphorecent.
